Roland Daniels 2:58
So next up, we have Rhonda Tolbert and Rhonda tell us a little bit about yourself.

Rhonda Tolbert 3:05
Yes, I am excited to be here to represent with nareb. At nareb, what I do is I participate with our marketing committee so that we can put things on our social media platforms and create flyers and things of that nature. And then I'm also a member of our new membership orientation committee. So what we do there is invite people. We have special guest speakers. We try, our goal is to have a special guest speaker once a month, and so with Gil, that's one of the things that I do on that committee. So it's very exciting to always be in different aspects of the organization,

Roland Daniels 3:43
right? And with nareb, you are also one of the expert panel members that will be at the workshop on the 22nd as well. Yes,

Rhonda Tolbert 3:51
I'm excited at that workshop. I'm gonna shop. I'm going to be discussing the Nevada clean energy funds initiatives that we have for this year, and talking to people about how they can get the funding they need for energy upgrades for their house.

Roland Daniels 4:04
And this morning, we also have Mr. Gil Sanchez. Gil, do you want to tell our audience out there a little bit about yourself?

Gil Sanchez 4:13
Well, certainly, my name is Gil Sanchez, and I am a long time, real test, long time na rap member. Over 20 years, my responsibilities here with the local chapter is that I am the local membership chair for the local chapter of the National Association of real estate brokers. I believe in this organization, love this organization, and thank you for having us today to discuss, of course.

Roland Daniels 4:37
So what's, what is the mission statement of nareb, and what is nareb? Okay,

Gil Sanchez 4:43
I'm glad you asked that question. The mission statement the purpose of narab, with the National Association of real estate brokers, is to enhance the professional and business conditions of narab Realtors members by strengthening the consumers capacity of black. Minority and emerging target market segments that the real to serve, and by promoting the real estate industry in general, utilizing economic, political, legal and social leverages to remediate a lot of the discriminatory practices housing practices that comes along with property ownership, okay, and

Roland Daniels 5:20
with nareb, what made them decide to start na rib? How did it get started? What's the purpose behind na rib? So I'm

Gil Sanchez 5:30
going to in keeping it short because of the time nareb was born out of the need for black real estate professionals to have a place to come to assemble, to come with an organization, to be a part of okay, this way to put that. And so nareb was formed out of that need. During World War Two, or after World War Two, the nation remained confronted with vested interest of deep seated racial segregations that were becoming increasingly difficult and impacted the citizens who had to endure those times during the post post war years, black Americans aspirations for a better life in America were emerging. Black people were attending gainful employment, and the Supreme Court had finally passed a ruling that restricted covenants and private agreements to exclude specific races from ownership and occupancy of real estate in exclusively white neighborhoods were not enforceable under the law. Like housing schools were still segregated conditions faliciously justified under the separate but equal notion, but despite court rulings, discriminatory housing practices still prevailed as equal housing had not yet become a reality. It was this environment of objective racial discrimination that soon to become first Realtors met in Tampa, Florida on a sweltering night, July 29 1947 and founded the National Association of real estate brokers. On that night, the founders committed to the fulfillment of the principal equal housing opportunity for all that is near rams, one of narab. Part of Naram mission is to foster democracy and housing for all

Roland Daniels 7:14
and Allen with nareb, is there still a crisis going on in today's world when it comes to home ownership? Well, you know,

Allen Shelton 7:25
I'm glad you asked me that question. Look, just to piggyback off of what Gil just said, the reason why we call ourselves Realtors is because we could not be called realtors, okay? NAR, which is National Association of real realtors, were formed in 1908 It wasn't until 1961 before they even allowed black agents, real real estate practitioners to even be part of their organization. Wow, I didn't know that absolutely and in 1960 now, get this, in 1968 they even lobbied against the Fair Housing Act. Now we're talking about literally seven years after they allowed us to be participants as Realtors they lobbied against. Now, narab was the, fundamentally, was the organization that was behind of creating the Fair Housing Act. Now the Fair Housing Act was the purpose of that was to stop discriminatory practices in housing. So the reason why we have set up ourselves and we call Realtors is because in 1947 it was enough. Enough was enough. Okay, and I think it should be fine for us to be able to operate in our spaces to understand the differences of the community that we serve. See our community is not like other communities, so you want someone who understands that community in order to help that community. So when we're talking about creating generational wealth, we know absolutely what that means. So our purpose here and as black Realtors of Southern Nevada is similar to what we initially started in 1947 we still have, it's unfortunate. There's still today in 19 in 1968 there were more black homeowners than today in 2025 so our purpose is still necessary. Our intentions are still honorable, and where we're still trying to do is make people understand that that democracy and housing doesn't come easy, and it's going to require us to push, push the envelope and push our efforts in order to get people to understand what that looks like. You know what that feels like to own a house, right? So

Roland Daniels 9:37
with nareb, their initiative is democracy in housing? Can one of you explain exactly what is democracy in housing? So everyone has an understanding of how important it is, and what does it mean?

Gil Sanchez 9:52
Well, democracy in housing, and I'm sure you'll find various explanations of what that. Means, but to us, it embodies everyone having the opportunity to own a home regardless of who you are, regardless of where you were born, regardless of your nationality. Everyone should have the opportunity to own a home. And so what na Rab does is NA rad through legislation to political advocacy and so on. Na Rab goal is to make sure that happens, especially in our minority communities, where black and brown community members reside. We know Alan just went over some numbers with you a few moments ago, right? And those numbers have not really changed over the years. So there's a need. There's a need for for what we do in our communities. In need, there's a focus to increase the number of black and minority homeowners that we have in this country.

Allen Shelton 10:53
Absolutely.

Roland Daniels 10:54
April, do you want to speak on anything regarding democracy and housing or with NARA, well,

Aprille Noble 11:02
thank you. Yes, as the director, Chairperson, rather for community outreach, my role is we have a team that that we plan and execute all the different community events. We work on coordinating home buyer seminars as this coming up on February 22 back to school events, and also give back events. And so by connecting with the community, that gives us an opportunity to talk about, what do you need to purchase a home? What are the type of requirements that you need to get, where you need to be in the process of owning your own home?

Roland Daniels 11:35
And don't we have an event coming up here within the next week or so? Yes, we

Aprille Noble 11:40
do. We'd love for you to join us at the Springs Preserve. There will be a black history month, the 16th annual Black History Month festival. Stop by our booth. We'll be able to connect with you and give you information on signing up for the workshop that's coming up the week after, on Saturday, February the 22nd you don't want to miss that opportunity for the first time home buyers workshop, which will be at Nevada Partners from 10am to 12pm and you'll be able to connect with six expert panelists, and they'll talk to you how you can purchase a home, maybe offering opportunities for money, funds that you'll be able To purchase a home as

Roland Daniels 12:20
well. Do you want to let the listeners know about our community partners who are all involved in this event on the 22nd

Aprille Noble 12:31
Yes, we do. Some of our community partners include Nevada clean energy, the Nevada housing division, Nevada Rural Housing, the neighborhood housing services of Southern Nevada, of course, Nevada Partners. So we're very excited many years of experience these panelists and these partners have for all of our attendees to have. That

Roland Daniels 12:54
is awesome. So when it comes to naref, so I've been a member of Narev now for one year, all right, and it's been an awesome experience. How long have you been with nareb? April? It

Aprille Noble 13:09
will be three years that I've been a member of nareb, and the relationships that I've gained over this short three year time frame, and the opportunities to engage with others in the community and share home ownership ideas and give them education and information. Has been awesome. Allen, you're up next.

Allen Shelton 13:28
So I've been a member of this local chapter of narab a little over 10 years. Wow, and I am so grateful to be part of an organization that understands and identifies the purpose of my community that I grew up. I grew up in Las Vegas, so I know our intent, and I know the purpose of what we serve, because we're talking about how you can get some free money to own a house that is so huge, and the feeling we all are homeowners, and I know the fear involved and what that feels like, but being on on the other side of that equation, when you actually own a house, it's a great feeling. You know, you don't have to worry about rent, which is going to increase, and you, you're you're learning how to earn money in your sleep. That's a beautiful thing.

Roland Daniels 14:20
So you've been a member now for almost a decade. Absolutely right? Yeah. And Mister Gil Sanchez, how long have you been with nareb? And we want the truth. You want the truth,

Gil Sanchez 14:34
nothing but the truth. No, actually, I've been with Na Rab for about 30 years. Wow. Three decades. Three decades. I got involved with narab After leaving the entertainment industry. I used to be with the Lakers organization. After leaving that industry, a friend of mine talked me into getting to real estate, and I've been with narab ever since.

Roland Daniels 14:53
That is awesome, yeah. So in this environment as well, with narab, we're trying to all. So increase membership. So for anyone that is interested in joining nareb, what can they do and who can participate and join nareb? Well,

Gil Sanchez 15:11
I'm glad you asked that question. Let me talk about the last part first, if I may, even though nareb is the largest minority trade association in the country. We welcome all real estate professionals from all from across all gamut of the real estate industry. We specialize, of course, on in the minority communities, right? That's where we were born out of. And so we we serve those communities. But anyone can be a member. You can be a title company, title rep, you can be an inspector, you can be an appraiser. It doesn't matter what facet of the real estate industry you're in. We welcome you to be a part of our membership. And our membership base is the key that allows us to continue to do what we do right, which is to advocate for home ownership and housing fair housing legislations that make it possible for the less fortunate to become homeownership. Now, as it relates to what can they do our members, once you join our local chapter, let me back up a little bit that also makes you a part of the national the national chapter, which is our parent company, if you will. And

Roland Daniels 16:25
what does that mean? What's the importance of having that backing? When it comes to the national it's

Gil Sanchez 16:32
huge, because you have a national footprint, okay, that supports everything that we do on the local level, and our national leaders are the ones who advocate for us on policies and fair housing legislation. Many people not aware of that, but narab actually wrote the 1968 fair housing legislation that came out of narab. So narab has had a footprint that the National has a footprint that is, I think, 75 years. I think this is our 75th year in existence. So we stand on some huge, huge shoulders of individuals that laid the foundation for us. And so being a being a part of that, what it brings national recognition. You also get to network with agents and brokers across the country, okay, okay, one of the huge benefits of being an Arab member is that as a real estate professional, locally, you get plugged into other professionals across the country. Right? If someone is searching for your services here in Las Vegas, they might they can search the database and come up with your name and number as a real estate professional. So it's a huge benefit, not to mention all the corporate sponsors that we have on the national level that supports this work,

Roland Daniels 17:44
okay? And they hold also different events and opportunities as well.

Gil Sanchez 17:48
Yes, we have a number of events locally here that we put on that our members can be a part of. For one, we have community affairs and political advocacy committee they can be involved in that. They want to be involved in the political scene. They want to be involved in legislation locally to impact housing, housing numbers and

Roland Daniels 18:08
Alan, aren't you part of the political advocacy? I am. I am the Chair.

Allen Shelton 18:14
Thank you for asking me Yes. So my job as the chair of that committee is to really, like Gil said, is to have those conversations with our local and elected officials and community leaders about the importance of home ownership, and what does that look like for this community, right here in Las Vegas, right here in Laos, and it is so critical right now, because if you look at the fires that just occurred In Los Angeles, right well, some of those homes were were gifted to the heirs and the Fed and the kids. That's that's generational wealth that you cannot get back, because if an insurance company come in there, they're going to pay them for the dirt and not the house, right? Well, well, when grandma bought the house, she might have got the house for 50,000 now the house, had it still been there, is worth 3 million, right? Where is that difference going to? Who is that difference going to? So that's one of the things. When we talk about creating generational wealth, what does it look like? What does it feel like? You know, that's part of it. So we need to, we need to let politicians know at that level, this is what we're advocating for. Can you create something that will steer people towards this effort so that we can make sure that people understand when we're sitting at the table talking about economics and development, right? We're talking about West Las Vegas has the ability to do that because we have homeowners who live in this area who buy services in this area. You know, look, our community wants to grow just like other parts of the

Roland Daniels 19:49
city. Yes, we do need the infrastructure Absolutely, and Gil, when it comes back to nareb and the other different services that, let's say, I. Um, members or people out there looking to join narep, how can they get started? What do they need to do?

Gil Sanchez 20:09
Okay, I'm glad you asked a question. You're asking all the right questions today. Yes, sir, but I have all the right answers. Come on. So, so one of the reasons, well, the best way to join is to contact us, or you can go to our website, which is narab lv.com,

Roland Daniels 20:32
one more time, please.

Gil Sanchez 20:33
Narab lv.org, forgive me. Narab lv.org, and you can sign up directly from the website. That's one way you can go. Okay, as far as you asked the question a few minutes ago, why should someone want to be a member? Or what's the benefit of being a member? Yes, let me touch on that for just a moment. Be so. One of the benefits of being a member of narab is narab advocates for public policies that protect and expand sustainable home ownership, one two. And if you're a real estate professional, this means a lot to you. Nara partners with other real estate traders, trade groups, civil rights organization, fair and equal housing advocates and financial services institutions create home ownership for African American and other minorities. Realize third nareb connects with the with real estate, real business opportunities. We connect our members with real business opportunities. Our realtors are listed on our national website, like I just mentioned a few moments ago, and the website of our financial partners, our affiliates, home buyers and other realtors network looking for business alliances. Fourth, narab alerts realtors to policy change. How important is that, when you're out in the field, to be kept abreast of policy changes if narab provides tools for our Realtors to meet today's real estate challenges with training, certification and designation to us ahead of the curve, narab offers Realtors only listing opportunities in locations where there is an active narab local board. Narab convenes national and regional conferences attended by financial industry decision makers, economists, federal, state and local housing policy makers and elected official. Nareb provides Realtors only discounts on both business and personal service. Naver provides links to experts from a broad spectrum of the real estate industry. Becoming a member of narab makes you a part of the oldest real estate trade association that has a professional real estate network located throughout the United States, all working to ensure what democracy and housing

Roland Daniels 22:32
that is a lot. Gil

Gil Sanchez 22:35
that's a lot. I mean to be a member right in April,

Roland Daniels 22:37
when it comes to membership, we know that we have, like the National Association of Realtors, they're part of our organization, right? There's real estate agents, there's loan officers, there's insurance agents, title. Can you give us a little bit more on the different aspects of who can join or who are members of narab here in Las Vegas. Yes,

Aprille Noble 23:01
as you mentioned, we just have a very diverse membership, of course, real estate agents, lenders, mortgage advisors, escrow officers, appraisers, in home inspectors, just anything affiliated with the real estate industry, even what you might consider at the the ground, 10 toes on ground level. Those are the types of members that we we have. And if I may, of course, if anyone wants to register to attend our workshop, our first time homebuyer workshop, or any future workshops, they can call me at 702-530-5019, and we will register them if they would like to

Roland Daniels 23:43
very good. And I know we also have a monthly membership meeting where people can come and join in person. Does anyone want to provide that information as well? So

Gil Sanchez 23:53
we have a monthly networking membership breakfast. This is for both existing members and potential members as well as new members. So this takes place every second Thursday of the month, every second Thursday of the month, and the address is 7251 West Lake, Mead Boulevard. Okay, sweet, 202 20 I'm sorry so at American Pacific mortgage, 7251, West Lake, Mead Boulevard, suite 220 Las Vegas, Nevada, 89128, if you need a phone number to contact 310-213-9563,

Roland Daniels 24:37
any last words for today's show, April, thank

Aprille Noble 24:40
you again for this opportunity to say these very important events for our community. You're welcome.

Allen Shelton 24:49
You know, I just I really appreciate you allowing us on this show, just to let the people where the listeners know how important, how critical and what we're doing. As narab as black. Real to Southern Nevada, and what we're advocating for and the purpose of home ownership and the necessity of home ownership in this city, as we're seeing a lot of development going around, you want to be in a home and not in a rental property, you know? So I would, I would say that be in the space that we're talking about doesn't matter if you're black, white, Hispanic, I can say that absolutely. So you know, if you're part of democracy and housing and what we stand for, get on board and be part of this organization. Because we're doing things. We're doing things. Any last words? Gil,

Gil Sanchez 25:37
well, last words always has to do with membership. So I'm going to again, encourage everyone that's under the sound of my voice. If you are in the real estate industry, if you are a black or minority real estate professionals, you need to be a part of narab, and I encourage you to join you. Thank you for having us out here today, of course. And again, democracy in housing, that's what we do. Well,

Roland Daniels 26:00
